abilENE, Texas — The Chicago-area construction workers who got overtime pay this week to help pay their mortgages got some extra help.
About 100 Chicago-based contractors got a bonus of up to $8 an hour and up to 2.5 hours of paid sick leave for the rest of the year, the city of Chicago announced Thursday.
It was part of a $3.6 billion deal struck with the state of Illinois.
The city said the money will help construction workers keep more money in their pockets.
The money is paid out of a federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) fund that is funded by federal funds.
The Chicago mayor said that city would not be able to collect it all until the end of 2019.
The city also announced it would hire about 1,000 construction workers in Chicago and around the country this year.
