AUSTIN, Texas — For years, the company building Austin’s new downtown skyline has been building new office buildings at the same site — the city’s existing Central Business District.
It’s a familiar, if slightly awkward, story, but with a major difference: It’s the only one in the U.S. today.
The rest of the country is moving forward with the opposite strategy, which is to build taller and taller office towers on the same footprint.
Austin is one of a handful of U.K. cities to have gone this route.
It has also created a massive office park for developers.
This is why Austin’s skyline looks a lot like the one in New York.
It is also one of the most expensive in the world.
It costs $6.5 billion, with construction of the city center expected to start in the spring of 2021.
What the numbers don’t tell you is how much it costs to build Austin’s tallest building, which will cost $16 billion, and the city is planning to spend nearly $5 billion on it.
“We need to be investing in new jobs, new opportunities, new housing and all of the things that make our city great,” Mayor Steve Adler told The Texas Tribune.
But what about the people who live in Austin?
“They’ve seen it all,” Austin City Council member Brian Cannon said.
“They know how to build, and they know what it takes to get a high-quality job.
But we’re talking about a lot of them who don’t have the education or experience or financial means to make it on their own.”
Cannon, who is also a Republican, believes the city should spend that much money on its own projects.
“I think we need to make sure we have a plan that’s going to take our city forward, and that we are able to invest in people that are the future of our city,” he said.
The plan has been in the works for about a year, Cannon said, and is still being drafted.
“It’s been a long time coming, but it’s been really good to get it all together,” he added.
This plan is designed to build an office park on the west side of the existing Central BUS Terminal. “
But right now, we need the federal government to do it.”

“There is no question that the future is bright for Austin and the whole of the state,” Adler said in a statement.
What will it take? “
Austin’s growth is one that is going to continue, and I’m determined that we will be an anchor for the nation.”
What will it take?
“We’re building a lot here,” Cannon said of the central BUS Terminal and Central Business district.
“As a result, we’ve got to be really creative with our choices of what kinds of buildings we can put up, what kind of amenities we can offer to the downtown.”
But it’s not clear what the cost of the building is going out to.
The building that sits at the center of the Central BUS terminal is $8.5 million, and it will cost roughly $2 billion to build.
It will be built by the city of Austin and an investment group led by the Austin Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The construction of this building is scheduled to start next summer.
But it may not be completed before the end of 2021 at the earliest.
“The plan is to make that work, and we have to do everything we can to make the building work,” Cannon told the Tribune.
“Because if we’re going to have to build a new building that will take years to build and that will cost hundreds of millions of dollars, then I think it’s going have to be a building that is actually in service for the long term, not just for a short period of time.”
