A new electric truck designed by Atkinson Construction Company for the British public will be based on the Tesla Model S P85+ but powered by a 100kW electric motor.
The company is aiming to become the largest electric truck company in the UK, with sales of 1.8 million trucks in 2020.
A spokesperson for Atkinson said the company has already begun designing and testing the new electric vehicles.
It will be called the P85X, and is expected to be introduced in 2021.
The P85x will be powered by an 85kW, electric motor, with Atkinson having taken a similar approach to Tesla in the past.
The electric truck will be able to travel around a track that’s two metres wide and five metres long, with up to 150 passengers.
“We’ve designed it to be the world’s most comfortable and efficient truck,” Atkinson’s Mark Davies said.
“You’ll never get that feeling of being in the back of a truck again.
It’s more like being in a small SUV.”
Atkinson said it’s not just about the speed, the way it handles and the ease of operation.
“The vehicle is so light it doesn’t feel like a normal truck,” Davies said, adding that it will be the first truck to use the electric powertrain.
“Our goal is to be able, with the electric drivetrain, to have the capability to travel from A to B with the vehicle at a speed of 0-100km/h in about six seconds,” he said.
Atkinson’s electric trucks will be designed to operate in wet weather, but the company is planning to make the vehicle waterproof in case of storm damage.
Davies said the vehicle will be fully modular, meaning it can be adapted to different applications.
“As the technology matures we will be providing the modular design to enable the company to offer this truck to the market,” he added.
Atkinson will also be providing a range of products for the company, including electric and diesel-powered forklifts.
Atkinson said that the company aims to be a leading electric truck provider in the region.
“Electric trucks have a proven track record for reducing emissions and increasing productivity,” Davies added.
“To support our long-term vision of the future, we are also developing a range on-board range-extender that is capable of providing up to 60 hours of continuous driving, a range extender that can also be mounted on a trailer, a vehicle battery pack that will deliver over 1,000km (600 miles) of range, and a range recovery system that will ensure the truck can recover to the nearest depot for further charging.”
The company said it has received a number of awards, including the £5m Innovation Award from the European Commission, the UK’s biggest technology investment ever.
